Individual therapy, sometimes known as psychotherapy or counseling, is an opportunity to meet one on one with your therapist to identify life struggles, establish goals, receive feedback and learn new tools to help you make positive changes in your life and overall mental health. In individual therapy, different techniques are used at the Creative Counseling Group including but not limited to: Eye Movement Desensitizing and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), Prolonged exposure therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Sand tray therapy.
The average follow-up individual therapy session is approximately 40-50 minutes long. The amount of time one could anticipate committing to attending therapy session varies per person and per case. Some individuals could benefit from as little as 2-6 session while others may need longer term therapy to get the full benefits. In individual sessions the client and therapist work closely to establish goals and as with most skills the more one practices the faster one can anticipate seeing change.
Family therapy is a type of psychological counseling (psychotherapy) that can help family members improve communication and resolve conflicts. In family therapy family members will participate in open constructive communication some group exercises and at times role playing to improve communication and overall interactions.
A family session is also not confined to just immediate family but could include other significant family members such as grandparents, aunts and uncles and step family members. Family therapy can also help to heal some of the hurt and stress associated with divorce and separation Creative Counseling Group does not give recommendations for custody, visitation or participate in any legal proceedings associated with minors.
A family therapy session will run between 40 and 50 minutes. The number of sessions will vary depending on the family. It is not essential that all members of the family are present at each session each time. Often there is the need for specific family members to be presents to work on specific conflicts that might be identified.
Much like in individual therapy the family will work collaboratively with the therapist to identify areas in need of improvement and establish realistic goals. Generally, families will be assigned homework that members of the family will be encouraged to work on both individually and as a family between sessions. These homework assignments are meant to help families put into practice the new skills they are learning in session.
At times therapy especially, family therapy can bring with it some feelings of discomfort or fear. Our experienced therapists understand this and will make all efforts to minimize uncomfortable feelings and they will use their discretion and take appropriate action if they feel a situation would be harmful to any of the family participants.
Couples therapy which is more recently known as relationship counseling is the process of counseling the parties of a human relationship to help them recognize and better manage or reconcile, troublesome differences. This form of therapy can also help lessen repeating patterns that cause stress upon the relationship. Finally, relationship counseling can help identify areas the couple can use to enhance their level of satisfaction with the relationship. Couples are encouraged to seek this supportive therapy before they are ready to give up on the relationship.
In relationship therapy a couple will be challenged to be open and honest which can be uncomfortable for some. Like family therapy a couple will work collaboratively with the therapist to identify areas in need of improvement and establish realistic goals. Couples will participate in constructive communication, role playing, and different activities meant to address needs, heal hurts and enhance satisfaction with the relationship.
A couples’ session will last between 40 and 50 minutes. The number of sessions will vary depending on the needs of the couple. On most occasions couples will be assigned homework that they will be encouraged to work on both individually and as a couple between sessions. These homework assignments are meant to help couples put into practice the new skills they are learning in session.
It is not uncommon that sessions with our significant others will involve discussion of close personal and intimate issues. Our therapists work to develop trust and help couples feel comfortable enough to talk about intimate issues. Couples are not required to talk about these personal issues, but openness is encouraged, and open constructive communication often leads to better satisfaction in the relationship.
