Joan Deluhery-Wagemester is a Licensed Independent Social Worker. She received her undergraduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation from University of Northern Iowa. She has worked inpatient and outpatient psychiatry from 1989 to 2012 and she went on to receive her Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa. Her experience includes working with adolescents, children, and adults. She has a passion for family therapy.
Joan has extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, family therapy, motivational interviewing, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), and Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality. She uses a strength- based approach to find practical solutions that work for individuals and families.
Joan’s experience as a recreation therapist contributes an additional activity perspective to the practice. She brings a positive, strength-based approach. She works with families on improving communication, resolving conflict, setting boundaries, and finding new ways to work together.
Joan believes that change happens when individuals are given guidance they need to draw from their strengths they already have. With the guidance, better choices can be made to have happier fulfilling lives.
When Joan has free time, she enjoys gardening, crafting, cooking, and traveling. She is busy with many roles; wife, mom, sister, aunt, great aunt, daughter, and business owner. She is working on training her miniature golden doodle to spend some time in the office. He is 3 years old and gets really excited meeting new people.
